Over the past ten years, organic farming in Luxembourg has steadily developed into a new mainstay of the agricultural sector. The domestic supply of organic products has also expanded considerably in recent years.

As can be seen on the chart, the number of organic farms has doubled in the last ten years. There are now 243 organic farms, 50 of which have only partially converted to organic farming. The organic farms can be categorised according to their main activity: 117 farmers, 19 vegetable growers, 23 wine-makers, 28 fruit growers, 28 beekeepers, 26 breeding operations, as well as other small activities and 2 businesses with special crops. The organically farmed area has also more than doubled, from 4.200 hectares in 2014 to 9.200 hectares in 2024. Almost 8.8 % of the total utilised agricultural area is now farmed organically.

In addition to the agricultural businesses, processors, traders and points of sale, as well as importers of non-European organic products also play an important role in organic farming. There are now 209 certified processors and traders in Luxembourg who process and market organic raw materials in accordance with the organic rules. All supermarkets and specialised organic shops based in Luxembourg, which are also subject to the organic control procedure, offer a wide selection of domestic and foreign organic products to meet the growing demand of consumers. In fact, in 2023, Luxembourg ranked third in the EU with 228 euros of annual per capita spending on organic food.

The progress in organic farming in Luxembourg shows that the sector still has a high potential for growth. This positive development will continue to be promoted in the coming years with targeted measures through the national action plan for the development of organic farming, such as raising awareness among farmers and consumers, and developing value chains for Luxembourg organic products by strengthening processing and marketing.
