The Swiss Urs Niggli is considered a scientific pioneer of organic agriculture. For 30 years he headed the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL. On Friday, 1 July 2022, Urs Niggli has been a guest at the Foire agricole in Ettelbruck, where he gave a talk entitled “Ten billion people can be sustainably fed! A European and global transformation in five steps”. It was followed by a discussion round.

You can watch the conference here.

According to Urs Niggli, “business as usual” is no longer an option: “Everyone is talking about the transformation of agriculture and nutrition. However, we have to give this transformation a direction. This cannot be further intensification and industrialisation, because the protection of the natural resources soil, water, air and biodiversity has the highest priority as the basis of all human activities. Agroecology is the most convincing concept on how to combine productivity and sustainability. Agroecology bridges the gap between farming knowledge and modern science and avoids polarisation. Consumers and citizens start thinking along the same lines and take responsibility.”
