Actors and labels in Luxembourg

Organic has a long tradition in Luxembourg. Decades before the EU requirements*, local farmers, winegrowers, fruit growers and market gardeners were already managing their farms with the aim of sustainably improving the quality of their products. From the very beginning, it was not only about organic production processes, but also about spreading awareness of the importance of organic among the population. And as is so often the case in Luxembourg, the land of short distances, State actors work closely and transparently with private organisations, federations, associations and organic professionals on the ground. Production, marketing and advisory services, the practical implementation of European and national requirements, but also the training of the next generation, inspection bodies and research in the two sectors are closely interlinked. And all the players have a declared common goal: to get a few steps closer every year to providing the population of Luxembourg with a basic supply of domestic organic products.

*All EU Member States have had to use the “Green Leaf” for labelling their organic products since 2010. Many EU Member States have introduced their own organic labels at national level, building on the European legislation. In fact, all existing EU regulations form the legal basis for the production and marketing of organic products, even if they are imported from third countries. There is a labelling obligation: all packaging must bear the identification number of the body responsible for the inspection of the final product:

for Luxembourg: LU-BIO-xx

for Germany: DE-ÖKO-xxx

for France: FR-BIO-xx
